Tremendous increase of more than 96 thousand tonnes in lentil exports from India

Mumbai. Although India is among the top three lentil producing countries, it still remains its largest importer in the world.

On the other hand, it is also exported from India to many countries of the world including Bangladesh, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Djibouti, Malaysia and Britain etc.

According to the available data, the total export of lentils from India jumped from 86,661 tonnes to 96,274 tonnes to 1,82,935 tonnes during 2022-24 as compared to the financial year 2022-23.

Bangladesh contributed the most in this, where lentil exports from India jumped from 61,151 tonnes to 1,20,224 tonnes.

Lentil was not sent from India to Iraq in 2022-23, but 12,450 tonnes were exported in 2023-24. Similarly, the export of lentils to the African country Djibouti increased from zero to 5085 tonnes.

During 2023-24, as compared to the financial year 2022-23, the export of lentils from India to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) jumped from 2689 tonnes to 3070 tonnes,

to Britain from 232 tonnes to 2678 tonnes and to other countries from 5620 tonnes to 13,327 tonnes. Nepal was the only important country where the export of lentils from India declined from 13,429 tonnes to 6668 tonnes.

During the financial year 2023-24, lentil exports from India were recorded at 22 thousand tonnes in April 2023, 16 thousand tonnes in May,

16 thousand tonnes in June, 13 thousand tonnes in July, 8 thousand tonnes in August, 14 thousand tonnes in September, 13 thousand tonnes in October, 10 thousand tonnes in November and 7 thousand tonnes in December 2023.

Similarly, 18 thousand tonnes of lentils were exported in January 2024, 21 thousand tonnes in February and 24 thousand tonnes in March. Foreign exchange was earned from this.
