Tur Procurement May Start in January

New Delhi. Although the arrival of new tur (tur), a major pulse crop of the Kharif season, has begun in some areas and will continue to increase in the coming days, a robust supply is expected to begin only in January.

The domestic market price of tur (tur) is currently trading below the minimum support price (₹8,000 per quintal), while a robust supply of new tur is expected to further soften prices, as imports of tur (tur) from Myanmar and African countries will continue unabated.

In view of this, the Central Government has planned to begin large-scale procurement of tur (tur) from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) starting in January, and necessary preparations are underway to increase procurement levels.

During the last Kharif marketing season, the government had set a national procurement target of 1.3 million tons of tur, while actual procurement was around 600,000 tons. Currently, the government has a stock of approximately 5 lakh tonnes of tur, while maintaining a strategic reserve of 1 million tonnes will require the purchase of an additional 5 lakh tonnes.

If procurement volumes exceed this, the buffer stock position will be strengthened, enabling the government to intervene more effectively to control potential spikes in domestic market prices during the off-season.

The quantity and timing of government procurement of tur in top-producing states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat have not yet been formally announced, but the January procurement quantity in Uttar Pradesh will be announced.

Central agencies like NAFED and NCCF will once again be responsible for procuring tur from farmers.

The Union Agriculture Ministry has estimated domestic production of 3.6 lakh tonnes of tur for the 2025-26 season.

It is believed that if the moisture content of tur remains near the approved level, government procurement could increase significantly. This will increase government stocks and farmers will also benefit significantly from the price support scheme.
