Tur production expected to be slightly lower than last year

New Delhi. Despite a slight increase in sown area, domestic production of pigeon pea (tur) is expected to decline this year as excess rainfall and waterlogging damaged this most important pulse crop of the Kharif season in major producing states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
According to the first advance estimate of the Union Agriculture Ministry, domestic tur production in the 2024-25 season was 36.24 lakh tonnes, which is expected to fall by 27 thousand tonnes to 35.97 lakh tonnes in the 2025-26 season. Preparations for harvesting the new tur crop are expected to gain momentum from next month.
Official data indicates that tur production may decline in most states compared to the previous season, but production is expected to improve in states like Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, during the season under review, the production of Tur is expected to fall from 1.77 lakh tonnes to 1.17 lakh tonnes in Andhra Pradesh, from 2.55 lakh tonnes to 1.68 lakh tonnes in Jharkhand,
from 9.98 lakh tonnes to 9.22 lakh tonnes in Karnataka, from 1.27 lakh tonnes to 93 thousand tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, from 14.23 lakh tonnes to 12.61 lakh tonnes in Maharashtra and from 2.01 lakh tonnes to 1.71 lakh tonnes in Telangana.
On the other hand, the production of this important pulse crop is expected to improve from 2.01 lakh tonnes to 2.93 lakh tonnes in Gujarat,
jump from 25 thousand tonnes to 1.79 lakh tonnes in Odisha and increase from 1.15 lakh tonnes to 2.86 lakh tonnes in Uttar Pradesh during the 2025-26 season as compared to the 2024-25 season. This will significantly offset the decline in national tur production.
It is worth noting that this is the Ministry of Agriculture's first advance estimate, with three more to be released in the coming months.
Tur production figures in these estimates may be subject to necessary revisions based on the evolving picture, so the current estimate should not be considered the final official figure.
