Water Stock in Dams and Reservoirs Below 90 Percent

New Delhi. The total water stock in India's 166 major dams and reservoirs remained below 90 percent of their total storage capacity for the fifth consecutive week as most parts of the country experienced a rainfall deficit last week. Nationally, only 1.7 mm of rainfall fell last week, 55 percent below the normal average of 3.7 mm.
According to the latest weekly data from the Central Water Commission (CWC), the water stock in all 166 major dams and reservoirs has declined to 155.226 billion cubic meters (BCM), which is 84.56 percent of their total storage capacity.
Despite this, this stock is approximately 7.5 percent higher than the same period last year and 22.23 percent higher than the 10-year average. This suggests that sufficient water stock is still available in dams and reservoirs for irrigation of Rabi crops.
According to the Meteorological Department, last week there was a 100% lack of rain in the eastern and northeastern regions of the country, the northwestern part and the central states, i.e. there was no rain at all, while South India also received 20% less rain.
The vigorous sowing of Rabi crops is still going on and its total area has reached above 479 lakh hectares.
In some areas, the day temperature remains high, due to which the moisture from the soil of the fields has started drying up. Rain is going to be felt in such areas and farmers have started efforts to irrigate the crops.
