Weak Demand for Rice in FCI's OMSS
★ In the latest tender under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS), the Food Corporation of India (FCI) sold only 21,000 tonnes of rice, which is just 18% of the total allocation of 1.16 lakh tonnes.
★ Since August, FCI has floated tenders to sell around 7 million tonnes of rice under the scheme, but only 2.3 million tonnes (about 33%) have been sold so far.
★ This indicates that rice is abundantly available in the open market and prevailing prices are lower, leading to weak offtake under the scheme.
