Cumin prices may increase: Cumin harvesting begins in China
New Delhi. Knowledgeable sources say that estimates of gradual increase in cumin prices are now being made. According to the information received, cumin harvesting has started in China, but due to adverse weather, there is a possibility of damage to the crop. Due to which, at present, prices have started being quoted strongly in the futures and spot markets. But a big increase in prices is not possible. Because in the month of July, the arrival of new cumin will also start in Turkey, Syria, Afghanistan. Due to which the export demand of Indian cumin may be affected. But for the time being, the market is being estimated to remain strong. It is worth mentioning that after the prices were quoted in the market at the beginning of the current week, there was an increase in the market at the end of the week.
Low arrival
Due to most of the total production coming to the mandis, the daily arrival of cumin in the mandis has started decreasing. In Gujarat's major mandi Unjha, the arrival has come down to 8/9 thousand sacks. While in Rajkot and Gondal Mandi, the arrival is 500/600 bags. In other Mandis also, the arrival is limited. Sources say that at present, the daily arrival of cumin in Gondal, Gujarat is 15500/16000 bags.
Arrival has also decreased in Rajasthan Mandis. Arrival in Jodhpur Mandi is 800/900 bags, in Merta and Nagaur, the arrival is 2000/2500 bags. Sources say that at present, the daily arrival of cumin in Rajasthan Mandis has come down to 8/9 thousand bags.
Total arrival
Sources believe that till now the total arrival of cumin in Gujarat Mandis has been 36/37 lakh bags, whereas the production estimate was 42/45 lakh bags. Till now, the total arrival of cumin in Rajasthan's mandis is estimated to be 18/20 lakh bags whereas there is news of cumin production in Rajasthan being 48/50 lakh bags. It is worth mentioning that due to the fall in sowing area, the total production of cumin in the country during the current season is estimated to be 90/95 lakh bags whereas last year the production was 1.10 crore bags.
Not much slowdown
There is no possibility of much slowdown in the current prices of cumin. Because the prices have come down a lot, apart from this, the arrival in the mandis has also started decreasing. Apart from this, due to the possibility of damage to the Chinese crop, there is a possibility of improvement in exports in the coming days. Due to which the prices of cumin are likely to remain strong during the month of June. Currently, the export price of cumin is being quoted at Rs 4210 per 20 kg. In the mandis of Gujarat, the price of average quality cumin is being quoted at Rs 3900/4100. Sources say that although farmers in Rajasthan still have sufficient stock of cumin, but this stock will come in the market when the price increases.
Higher exports
Last year, due to high production of cumin in the country, the prices of cumin were quoted softly. Due to which a spectacular 60 percent increase was registered in the export of cumin in the first eleven months of the year 2024-25. Although there was a high increase in quantity, but due to low export prices, only 17 percent increase was registered in income. According to the data released by the Spices Board, during April-24 - February-2025, 211143.75 tonnes of cumin was exported. And the income received from export was 5734.36 crores. Whereas during April-23 - February-2024, the export of cumin was 132019 tonnes and the income received from export was 4885.80 crores.
