Lentil Market Softens: Weak Demand Continues to Lower Prices
Mumbai. The lentil market remained subdued during the current week. Prices declined due to weak buying and sluggish offtake of lentils. Purchases from lentil millers were also limited, depriving the market of the expected support, and lentil prices remained volatile. According to market experts, the lack of consumer demand has further slowed trade in wholesale markets. Continued weak offtake continues to put pressure on lentil prices. According to the latest data from the Union Agriculture Ministry, lentil sowing in the current Rabi season has increased from 10.44 lakh hectares last year to 11.42 lakh hectares. The increase in sowing area is expected to increase production in the coming months, which could influence the market direction. Latest data from the government agency, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), shows that lentil exports to foreign countries declined to 72,500 tonnes in October 2025, compared to 75,235 tonnes in September 2025. This decline in exports for two consecutive months indicates pressure on the global market. In October 2025, Australia shipped the most lentils to Pakistan, with a total of 22,529 tonnes. This was followed by Bangladesh with 22,500 tonnes and India with 17,105 tonnes. Despite stable demand from major buyer countries, limited supply appears to have reduced total exports. According to the ABS, Australia experienced a sharp decline in lentil production last season, which directly impacted exports. According to available data, total lentil exports from Australia declined to 1,098,547 tonnes during the November 2024-October 2025 period, compared to 1,406,307 tonnes during the same period of the 2023-24 season.
The Canadian lentil market continues to fluctuate. Global uncertainty, fresh supplies from Australia, and a lending crisis in Algeria have impacted demand for Canadian coarse green lentils. This has led to a price drop to 25 cents per pound, with some high-quality goods expected to reach 27 cents. Premium-grade lentils on an LGL basis are seeing limited interest, but trading is low due to strict requirements on grain size and color. Meanwhile, increased production in Australia, Russia, and Kazakhstan has increased global supply, putting pressure and competition on Canadian red lentils.
Due to continued selling pressure from importers and sluggish demand, imported lentil prices declined by Rs 50/125 per quintal during the current week, and at the end of the week, the prices were Rs 5675 for Mundra, Rs 5750 for Hazira, Rs 6050 for container Canada, and Rs 6050/6100 for Australia. Similarly, Kolkata lentil prices also declined by Rs 50 per quintal this week, and the prices were Rs 6200 per quintal for Australia at the end of the week.
