Paddy and Rice Prices Soften Due to Weak Demand

New Delhi: Although paddy arrivals in the markets of major producing states remain limited, prices have generally remained soft due to sluggish buying by millers and processors. An unexpected rise in paddy supply is being observed in Punjab's markets, and some arrivals are occurring in Haryana's markets, whereas markets in Rajasthan have begun to go quiet. Paddy is arriving in some markets of Uttar Pradesh, and 'A-grade' paddy is arriving regularly in Chhattisgarh.
Delhi
During the week of September 5–11, paddy arrivals at Delhi's Narela market rose to 18,000 bags; however, due to weak demand, the price of '1509 Combine' paddy dropped by ₹210 to ₹3,790 per quintal. In Chhattisgarh, daily arrivals reached 5,000–6,000 bags in Bhatapara and 3,000–5,000 bags in Rajim; however, robust buying led to a price increase of ₹140 per quintal for HMT and Shriram paddy varieties in Bhatapara.
Punjab / Amritsar
Heavy arrivals of Basmati paddy have begun in Amritsar, Fazilka, and Tarn Taran (Punjab), but as trading activity has not kept pace, prices have softened slightly. Similarly, paddy arrivals are taking place in Tarawari, Tohana, and Gohana in Haryana.
Rice
As for rice, trading remained sluggish in many markets during the week under review, causing prices to fall by ₹200–300 per quintal. There has been no expected improvement in Basmati rice export performance, as the Strait of Hormuz shipping route near Iran remains unsafe.
Amritsar
Rice prices in Amritsar have dropped significantly. Prices of Parmal Steam rice fell by ₹550 per quintal, while other rice varieties saw a decline of ₹200–250 per quintal. In Kota, the price of 1718 Sela rice also dropped by ₹600 per quintal. However, an increase of up to ₹500 per quintal in rice prices was recorded in Karnal, Haryana.
