Wheat sowing area is behind last year due to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan

The wheat sowing area for the current Rabi season in India is facing challenges, with a significant decline in key producing states like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
While wheat sowing has been progressing positively in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, the national area has decreased by 15.5% compared to last year. As of November 8, the total wheat sowing area was 41.30 lakh hectares, down from 48.87 lakh hectares last year.
The Union Agriculture Ministry has estimated the total wheat sowing area for this season at 336.23 lakh hectares, with a production target of 114 million tonnes (11.40 crore tonnes).
However, the timely sowing of wheat is critical to achieving this goal, particularly in light of the potential threat of high temperatures in February-March 2025, which could adversely affect the crop.
The Director of the Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research, Karnal, mentioned that although wheat sowing has just started, it is expected that most of the sowing will be completed by the end of the month.
The five-year average area for wheat sowing has been estimated at 312 lakh hectares, but the government is hopeful that the actual sowing area will exceed this average.
The sharp decline in Madhya Pradesh’s sowing area is notable. Last year, the state had sown wheat on 26.58 lakh hectares by November 8, but this year, the area has shrunk to just 10.56 lakh hectares.
Data updates are delayed in the state, which could further affect the figures. Similarly, Rajasthan has also seen a slight reduction, with sowing dropping from 2.06 lakh hectares to 1.92 lakh hectares.
In contrast, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana have reported positive increases in wheat sowing areas. In Uttar Pradesh, sowing has increased marginally from 9.31 lakh hectares to 9.36 lakh hectares, and the state aims to sow wheat on 101.12 lakh hectares this season.
Punjab's sowing area has seen a sharp rise from 8.31 lakh hectares to 14.13 lakh hectares, while Haryana has also seen a significant increase from 1.12 lakh hectares to 3.62 lakh hectares.
By November 12, Haryana’s wheat sowing area had already surpassed 5 lakh hectares, and Rajasthan’s sowing area had exceeded 3 lakh hectares.
In summary, while wheat sowing in some states has been positive, the overall national area has declined due to setbacks in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Timely sowing and favorable weather conditions will be crucial to meet the production targets for the season.
