New Delhi. As part of its measures to enable the country to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of pulses, the Central Government has identified 48 new districts in which Arhar (Tuvar) and Urad can be cultivated on a large scale.
Under this, 35 districts have been identified for Tuvar and 13 districts for Urad. When cultivation starts on a large scale there, the total sowing area of these two pulses in the Kharif season will naturally increase.
The government has planned to distribute high productivity seeds of pulses in these districts so that farmers can get help in getting maximum production.
It is worth mentioning that to meet the rapidly increasing demand and consumption, all major pulses except moong are being imported on a large scale from abroad in the country, which also includes Tuvar, Urad, Gram, Masoor and Yellow Peas. During the last financial year, a huge import of pulses worth $3.74 billion was done in the country.
According to senior official sources, efforts are being made to persuade farmers to cultivate pulses in as much area as possible by going from village to village.
The government has set a target of making the country completely self-sufficient in terms of pulses by the end of the year 2027.
The Union Minister of Cooperation had claimed that from the year 2028, there will be no need to import even a single kg of pulses from abroad.
The Union Agriculture Ministry is registering farmers in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu for the cultivation of tuvar and urad.
The production area of kharif pulse crops has increased to 102 lakh hectares by 26 July this time, which is 14 percent more than the sowing area of 89.40 lakh hectares in the same period last year.
