Yangon. A good quantity of pulses is being exported regularly from India's northeastern neighbor Myanmar and many other countries including India are showing great interest in its purchase. According to a report of the Ministry of Commerce of Myanmar, exports took place from 1 April to 28 June 2024.

Under this, shipment of about 6.38 lakh tonnes of pulses was done by sea route, which earned a little more than $ 550.5 million.

Apart from this, about 24 thousand tonnes of pulses were sent to other countries through border road, which was worth about $ 20 million. Pulses are mainly sent to China and Thailand through the border route. According to the report of the Ministry of Commerce,

during the entire period of last financial year i.e. from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024, more than 16.02 lakh tonnes of pulses were shipped from Myanmar through sea route, which generated a great income of $ 134.2628 crore.

Similarly, more than 1.57 lakh tonnes of pulses were exported through border road route, which generated an income of $ 14.14 crore. Pulses like Urad, Moong and Arhar are mainly exported from Myanmar.

Out of this, most of the Urad and Arhar (Tuvar) are exported to India, while Moong is exported to China and some European countries. It is worth noting that the import of Moong has been banned in India since February 2022. On 18 June 2021, an agreement was signed between India and Myanmar at the government level,

which emphasized mutual cooperation in the trade of urad and tuvar under the government-to-government scheme. Under this agreement, India has to import 2.50 lakh tonnes of urad and 1.00 lakh tonnes of tuvar annually from the private sector of Myanmar.

This agreement was for five years, the period of which will start from 2021-22 and continue till 2025-26. Earlier, there was less production of pulses in Myanmar, but after getting a huge and permanent market like India, the production there has started increasing rapidly.
