Global Grain Production Forecast Cut by 3 Million Tons

London. In its latest report, the International Grains Council (IGC) has projected a global grain production of 2.41 billion tons for the 2026-27 season—a figure that is 3 million tons lower than the estimate made in March.
The report states that the production of all major commodities, including wheat and maize, may experience a slight decline, as the crisis in West Asia could lead to a reduction in the stocking and usage of chemical fertilizers across several countries.
Furthermore, shifts in the crop cultivation landscape are also possible in certain nations. Countries in the Southern Hemisphere are likely to experience a more pronounced impact from these developments. It also remains crucial to observe the intensity and activity of the El Niño weather cycle this year.
According to the IGC report, despite certain adverse conditions, the total global grain production this year (2026-27) could reach the second-highest level on record.
The sowing season for various crops has already commenced in North America and Europe, while the harvest season—including that for wheat—is currently underway in South Asia.
