Mumbai. After the Government of India decided to make the import of Desi gram duty free, there are indications of its import increasing rapidly in the country.
Earlier, there was an overall import duty of 66 percent on Desi gram, which the government has postponed till 31 October 2024. Only 270 tonnes of gram was imported from Australia in India in April,
but its quantity jumped to 21,641 tonnes in May and further increased to 25,632 tonnes in June. In this way, during the quarter of April-June 2024, India's import of Australian gram increased to 47,543 tonnes. The import of gram is expected to increase even after June.
Due to the complex situation of supply and availability in the domestic sector and high price, Indian importers are getting encouragement to increase the import of gram from Australia. Earlier, a little bit of it was imported from African countries as there was no duty on it.
Sowing of gram has already been completed in Australia. This time not only has the area increased but due to good rains at regular intervals in the major producing areas, the crop is also growing satisfactorily, due to which the average yield rate and total production are expected to increase.
The new crop of gram will arrive there in October-November when its sowing will be going on in India. Meanwhile, during July to September,
Australian producers will be running their stocks. Meanwhile, during July to September, Australian producers will get ample opportunity to increase the sale of their stock of gram because Indian importers will show great interest in its purchase.
In India, during the festive season, the demand and consumption of gram flour often increases a lot. Despite the imposition of stock limit on gram, there is no sign of softening in its market price.
