New Delhi: The central government has stated that sufficient stocks of maize are available in the country to meet the demand from the ethanol, poultry feed, and starch manufacturing industries, as well as other uses.

According to official data, 125.75 lakh tonnes of maize were used for ethanol production during the 2024-25 marketing season.

According to the Union Minister of State for Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, a quota of 477.80 crore liters of ethanol was allocated to maize-based distilleries during the 2024-25 season, requiring 125.75 lakh tonnes of maize.

The Minister of State for Food further stated that the total domestic production of maize in the entire 2024-25 marketing season increased significantly, reaching approximately 434 lakh tonnes.

This quantity is sufficient to meet the demand and requirements of the poultry industry, ethanol industry, and other sectors.

To maintain feed supply and availability, the poultry industry is also focusing on increasing the use of alternative ingredients along with maize, including rice bran, broken rice, millet, and wheat bran. The use of maize by-products such as Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) is also increasing rapidly.

Maize has now emerged as the most prominent raw material for ethanol production, and despite its massive consumption for this purpose, the country has ample stocks to meet the demand from other sectors. Domestic maize production is expected to increase further in the 2025-26 season.
