New Delhi. Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has stressed on the need for integrated or collective efforts of all parties to rapidly increase the production of pulses in the country and said that the state governments will have to play an important role in this.
The Central Government is taking every possible step to achieve the goal of self-sufficiency in pulses production. Under this, the Agriculture Minister stressed that the Central Government is committed to buy 100% of the production of tur, urad and lentil from farmers in all the producing states.
The Agriculture Minister directed the officials to make farmers aware on this issue so that more and more farmers can be motivated and encouraged to cultivate pulses.
Expressing happiness over the increase of more than 50 percent in the production area of pulses during the current Kharif season, the Agriculture Minister said that there has been a good increase especially in the area of tur (tuvar) and urad.
It is known that lentil cultivation takes place in the Rabi season. Due to domestic production of pulses being less than demand and consumption, India has to import it in large quantities from abroad and the domestic market price also remains high.
Pulses are imported in large quantities from Canada, Australia, Russia, Myanmar and some African countries.
The Agriculture Minister said that availability of fertilizers and seeds in sufficient quantity should be ensured to the farmers at the right time in Kharif as well as Rabi season so that there is no hindrance in the sowing and progress of crops.
This time there is good monsoon rain and the price of Tuvar and Urad is higher than the minimum support price, hence farmers are getting a good opportunity and encouragement to increase its area.
