Allegations of Indian Rice Dumping in the US are Baseless

New Delhi. Although some millers in the US are complaining about the dumping of Indian rice in the American market, and the US President has acknowledged this and assured further action, the Indian government has completely rejected the complaint (allegation), calling it baseless and fabricated.

The Union Commerce Secretary stated that India primarily exports expensive Basmati rice to the US, making dumping unlikely. The US has not yet initiated any anti-dumping investigation into Indian rice.

According to the Commerce Secretary, prima facie, there is no case of Indian rice dumping in the US because India primarily exports high-priced, premium quality rice there, which is not produced in the US.

Industry and trade analysts also say that Indian rice poses no threat to American millers, nor is there any dumping. According to the Commerce Secretary, the Basmati rice exported from India to the US is a GI (Geographical Indication) product.

Rice constitutes a very small portion of the total shipments from India to the US. Basmati rice has a much higher export price compared to ordinary varieties, so importers there only import it according to domestic demand and consumption. No investigation is currently underway.

It is noteworthy that at a roundtable conference at the White House earlier this month, the US President said that he might consider imposing additional tariffs on all countries, including India, Thailand, and China, that are accused of dumping rice in the US.

When some farmer representatives complained about rice dumping during the roundtable conference, the US President assured them that he would "look into" the matter. He said that the problem could be easily solved by imposing higher tariffs.
