Bhubaneswar. The productivity of various crops in Odisha has come down to below the national average.

Under this, the yield rate of rice in particular remained 19 percent below the national average. Similarly, the productivity rate of pulses crops is also 61 percent behind the national average.

Giving this figure in the Economic Survey of 2022-23 presented in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, it has been said that there is a dire need to increase the yield rate of crops so that a good increase in the income and total production of farmers can be ensured.

Various crops are cultivated in a large area in the state, but due to poor yield rate, the expected production is not achieved.

The Economic Survey Report states that the production of millets is being promoted in Odisha and efforts are also being made to increase its consumption.

Efforts are on to increase production and use under the Odisha Millet Mission since the year 2017-18. The Central Government is also encouraging it.

As a result, the production of millets in the state increased by 47.3 percent during 2022-23, while its production registered a strong increase of 121 percent between 2017-18 and 2022-23.

According to the survey report, food grain production in Odisha increased by 24.2 percent from 113.90 lakh tonnes in 2021-22 to 141.40 lakh tonnes in 2022-23. Odisha is the fifth largest rice producer state in India.

Odisha's contribution to the total national production of rice during the year 2021-22 was 7 percent. Odisha also contributes a good amount of rice to the central pool.
