Sao Paulo. Brazil, located in the continent of South America, is the world's largest producer and exporter of sugar and its share in the global export market is above 40 percent. It is followed by Thailand, European Union and Australia etc.
As far as India is concerned, it remains the second largest producer of sugar in the world after Brazil, but exports are not taking place from here because the government has not released its export quota from June 2023 and it is not likely to be released in the near future.
Prior to that, India had once overtaken Thailand to become the world's second largest sugar exporter when it succeeded in shipping about 110 lakh tonnes of sugar.
The weather conditions in Brazil are favorable for sugarcane and sugar producers and along with soybean and maize, sugar also plays an important role in improving its economy. More than 400 lakh tonnes of sugar is produced annually in Brazil while domestic use is around 100 lakh tonnes.
As a result, there is a huge exportable surplus stock of sugar. Brazilian sugar is somewhat cheaper than that of other exporting countries, so its export demand remains strong.
