Canada: Lentil Production and Export Estimates (AAFC)
2024-25 Season:
★ Lentil exports from Canada rose to 1.82 million tonnes, up 9% from the previous year. Of this, 1.1 million tonnes were red lentils and 0.72 million tonnes were green lentils. The main export destinations were Turkey, India, the United Arab Emirates, and the European Union.
★ Domestic consumption increased to 0.35 million tonnes, while ending stocks rose sharply to 0.55 million tonnes.
★ Due to higher supplies, the average price declined by 21% to USD 790 per tonne. Large Green Lentil (No.1) prices averaged USD 464/t higher than Red Lentil (No.1) prices.

2025-26 Forecast:
★ With larger area and better yields in Western Canada, lentil production is projected to increase by 0.54 million tonnes to around 3.0 million tonnes.
★ Production of large green lentils is expected to rise sharply to about 0.9 million tonnes, while red lentil production is forecast to decline to around 1.6 million tonnes.
★ Other lentil types together are expected to produce about 0.5 million tonnes.
★ Total supply may rise by 0.9 million tonnes compared to last year due to higher carry-in stocks.
★ Exports are forecast to rise to 2.1 million tonnes, with India, the UAE, the EU, and Turkey remaining key markets. Domestic consumption is expected to stay steady at 0.351 million tonnes, while ending stocks may more than double to over 1.1 million tonnes.
★ With higher supply, average prices are forecast to drop by about 33% to around USD 530 per tonne. The price premium of large green lentils over red lentils is expected to narrow significantly compared to last year.

United States:
★ According to USDA estimates, in 2025-26, the US lentil area is projected to rise by 15% to 0.43 million hectares, mainly in Montana and North Dakota.
★ With higher yields and less crop loss, production is expected to increase by 23% to 0.5 million tonnes.
Note:
★ India primarily imports red lentils from Canada, and since red lentil production in Canada has declined this year, total production numbers may appear misleading. Interestingly, Australia’s lentil output has increased roughly by the same margin that Canada’s red lentil production has fallen.
