Canadian Chickpea Market Remains Subdued

Winnipeg. Trading in Canada's major markets remains extremely limited this week, similar to last week, with little activity from buyers and sellers.
Analysts say this is not surprising. Chickpea production in Canada has increased dramatically this year compared to last year, so buyers are not particularly concerned about securing supplies and are therefore not showing any urgency.
Record production and limited trading are putting significant pressure on chickpea prices. Although Canada has seen a remarkable increase in chickpea productivity and yield, unseasonal rains during the harvest season have significantly impacted the quality.
According to rough estimates, only 58 percent of the Canadian chickpea crop is considered good quality, while the remaining 42 percent is considered lower quality or sample grade.
Chickpea prices are relatively stable in the Canadian domestic market and mixed in the global market, while the overall sentiment remains bearish.
This clearly indicates weak demand. Australia has seen a bumper crop of desi chickpeas, and chickpea planting area in India is ahead of last year's levels.
