Canadian Pea Production Reaches 3.9 Million Tonnes

Saskatoon. Due to an increase in planted area and improved average yields, Canada's total pea production is projected to jump 31 percent compared to 2024-25, reaching 3.9 million tonnes in the current 2025-26 marketing season. Harvesting has already been completed.
Favorable conditions are expected to result in a 22 percent increase in yellow pea production to 3.1 million tonnes, while green pea production is estimated at 600,000 tonnes. The remaining production consists of other varieties and categories.
Thanks to a large carryover stock and strong production, total pea availability in Canada is expected to jump 33 percent to 4.4 million tonnes. Of this, approximately 2.2 million tonnes could be exported, slightly more than the 2024-25 season. High tariffs in China and India are expected to dampen pea exports.
With domestic demand and consumption remaining normal in Canada, the carryover stock of this important pulse crop is likely to increase sharply to a new record level at the end of the current marketing season.
The large stock and limited demand could put significant pressure on pea prices. The average price during the season is projected to fall 31 percent compared to 2024-25, to $280 per tonne. Prices for all varieties and categories of peas are expected to decline.
During November 2025, yellow pea prices increased by $5 per tonne and green pea prices by $15 per tonne in Saskatchewan producer markets. Despite weak export demand, pea prices in Canadian markets have remained relatively stable.
This is attributed to below-average production of rabi pulses, particularly peas, in India, where the planted area is lagging behind last year. It is important to note that only yellow peas are allowed to be imported into India, and a 30 percent customs duty is also applicable on them.
