Chana Market Likely to Remain Firm on Lower Imports, Improved Sowing and Limited Selling
★ The chana (gram) market is currently showing a stable to firm trend, with further improvement in prices likely ahead of the arrival of the new crop. By mid-January 2026, prices in major domestic mandis are trading above December averages, providing underlying support to the market.

Price Trend
★ Between November and January, chana prices have recorded a gradual but consistent improvement. In key markets such as Delhi–Rajasthan, Katni Desi, Latur Annagiri and Mumbai, prices have remained ₹200–300 per quintal higher than December averages. Compared with September 2025, December prices for most varieties were stable to firm, clearly indicating the absence of significant market pressure.

Imports
★ The import situation remains supportive for the market. During April–October 2025, chana imports are estimated at around 0.172 million tonnes, compared with nearly 0.20 million tonnes during the same period last year.
★ In the previous financial year, total chana imports were around 1.5 million tonnes, of which nearly 1.3 million tonnes arrived between December 2024 and April 2025 alone. In contrast, the pace of imports in the current season has been significantly slower.

Crop Situation
★ Chana sowing has improved in the ongoing rabi season, and the domestic crop condition is currently reported to be satisfactory. However, adequate rainfall will be crucial in the coming weeks to ensure good yields. Weather developments will play a decisive role in determining final production outcomes.

Global Market Signals
★ In Australia, chana production has been strong this season, but farmers are reluctant to sell at current lower price levels. Growers are closely watching the Indian crop and demand situation, which has reduced the likelihood of immediate pressure on international prices.

Outlook
★ Considering lower imports, limited domestic selling pressure and cautious global farmer sales, chana prices are expected to remain firm ahead of the new crop arrival. If weather conditions remain normal and imports stay controlled, the chana market is likely to maintain a positive near-term outlook in India.
