Chances of opening commercial export of white non-basmati rice are low

New Delhi. The central government is currently giving priority to easing the supply and availability of rice in the domestic sector rather than exporting it.
Although there is sufficient stock of rice in government warehouses, due to which there will be no difficulty in ensuring internal food security and at the same time, new paddy-rice will also start arriving from October,
due to which there will be a continuous increase in government stock, but the government feels that now is not the right time to open the export of white non-basmati rice.
The production area of Kharif paddy is ahead of last year and the country is also receiving good monsoon rains. Due to this, an increase in rice production is expected.
It seems that the government wants to take a decision to open or close the export of white rice only after assessing the total area of paddy and the condition of the crop.
This assessment is expected to be done in the third-fourth week of September. There is about 2.5-3 times more rice stock in government godowns as compared to the minimum required buffer quantity, which also includes the quantity of paddy from which the Food Corporation is going to get rice after custom milling.
The supply situation of rice is also good in the domestic sector, but there are no signs of its prices coming down.
The government fears that commercial export of non-basmati white (raw) rice may have a psychological effect on the domestic market and the government's efforts to bring down its prices may be hampered by it. If the situation remains favorable in October-November, then opening of export can be considered.
