New Delhi. Although the government has not set any target for the construction of cold storages and godowns/warehouses in its 100 days agenda,
but their construction is being encouraged by implementing various schemes. Under this, godowns/warehouses are being constructed for cold storage of perishable horticultural products (fruits and vegetables) and safe storage of food grains.
In fact, there is a possibility of damage to various agricultural crops during and even after harvesting, which has become necessary to prevent.
According to official data, the average damage during and even after harvesting of crops is 4.77 percent for paddy, 4.17 percent for wheat, 389 percent for maize, 4.37 percent for millet and 5.92 percent for sorghum.
Similarly, the average loss for pulse crops is 5.65% in pigeon pea (tuvar), 6.74% in gram, 5.83% in black gram and 6.19% in green gram whereas in oilseed crops,
the average loss is 4.46% in mustard, 2.87% in cotton seed, 7.51% in soybean, 3.06% in safflower, 4.38% in sunflower and 5.73% in groundnut.
Apart from this, crops of fruits and vegetables are also destroyed. Not only this, but crops of betel nut, cashew, coconut,
sugarcane, black pepper, red chilli, coriander and turmeric are also damaged. Appropriate efforts need to be made to stop this loss.
