Mumbai. The Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA), along with several leading organizations of the indigenous vegetable oil industry and trade sector – including KOTA, IGCA, SOPA, and MOPA – are collectively engaging with the Department of Consumer Affairs to implement a standard packaging rule for edible oils and fats.

After several rounds of discussions, the five organizations have submitted a joint recommendation to the government, urging the ministry to issue a clear "Standard Operating Procedure" (SOP) for the implementation of this rule. This includes defining well-defined pack sizes for major edible oils.

The recommendation proposes standardizing the packaging of edible oils in fixed quantities and making it mandatory to mention the quantity under the primary declaration of weight.

Special emphasis has been placed on mentioning the weight in brackets on the edible oil packaging.

Edible oils made from minor or less commonly used oilseeds and oil-bearing commodities have been exempted from this standard packaging rule, as their consumption is low and they do not significantly impact the market.

This joint effort by the industry will help protect the interests of consumers and bring clarity to the regulations, making it easier to conduct business.
