Desi Chana – Sowing and Market Outlook

According to Gaurav Bagdai of G.P. Agri Brokers, Rajkot, the availability of Desi Chana (chickpeas) is currently quite low.
He said that if demand improves, Chana prices at Gujarat ports could rise to ₹5,900–6,000 per quintal, while in the absence of demand, prices may remain range-bound between ₹5,500–5,800 per quintal.
Seed demand is being seen across the country.
Sowing conditions in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh are expected to be good due to adequate soil moisture.
However, in many parts of Rajasthan, farmers may prefer wheat sowing as the region has received heavy rainfall.
Trade with Australia is currently lower compared to last year, but it may increase in the future since India remains Australia’s largest buyer of chickpeas.
Gaurav Bagdai advised keeping a close watch on imports from Australia, as they are likely to influence market direction.
November shipment rates, which had earlier fallen to $475–480 per tonne, have now risen to around $520. Once this material reaches India, prices are expected to hover around ₹5,300–5,500 per quintal.
One vessel carrying Australian chickpeas has already departed for India and Pakistan, and the quality is reported to be very good. The cargo is being offered at rates similar to spot market prices.
He suggested that traders should reduce ready stock on every price rise and continue purchasing November shipment material for better positioning.
