Edible Oil Imports Projected to Hit 10-Month High in July

Mumbai: Leading industry analysts and experts project that the country's edible oil imports in July will rise to a 10-month high, driven by refiners increasing imports of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) and Crude Soy Oil to build up stocks ahead of the festive season. According to dealers and analysts, palm oil imports surged by 50 percent in July compared to June, reaching 7.33 lakh tonnes—the highest level in five months.

Similarly, soybean oil imports are estimated to have risen sharply by 32 percent to 5.01 lakh tonnes, marking a seven-month high. Sunflower oil imports also saw a 4 percent increase during this period, reaching 2.53 lakh tonnes. Consequently, total edible oil imports into India are estimated to have risen by 34 percent in July compared to June, reaching approximately 14.90 lakh tonnes—the highest level in 10 months. Imports of all three major edible oils increased during this period.

It is important to note that these estimated figures are based solely on shipments via sea routes and do not include duty-free edible oil imports from Nepal via land or road routes. Furthermore, these figures are based on estimates by industry analysts; the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) is scheduled to release its monthly report in mid-August, which will provide detailed data on edible oil imports for July.
