Hanoi. The Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA) has stressed the need to continue to develop and expand its plantation area to increase the production of pepper and to improve the quality of the product to promote exports.
According to the association, during the first seven months of the current calendar year i.e. January-July 2024, pepper exports from Vietnam were a little over 1.64 lakh tonnes, which was 2.2 percent less than the year 2023, but the income from it increased by about 41 percent to $ 764.2 million.
The main reason for this is that due to the good quality of pepper, its export offer price became very high.
The interesting fact is that along with black pepper, white pepper is also exported on a large scale from Vietnam.
The Chairperson of the Association has given several suggestions to maintain the export performance at a high level, which includes maintaining continuity in production, not allowing chemical residues in pepper to exceed a certain limit,
improving the production process and method, paying attention to pest control and adopting new methods of storage and preservation. According to the Chairperson, emphasis should be laid on the development of new and improved varieties of pepper which have high yield rate,
better quality and greater ability to protect themselves from insects and diseases. The Chairperson has also urged the government officials to provide full support and encouragement to the producers in setting up new pepper plantations and renovating old plantations.
Vietnam is the largest producer and exporter of pepper in the world and exports this important spice in large quantities to countries like the US, Germany, United Arab Emirates, India and China, earning valuable foreign exchange.
