New Delhi. The southwest monsoon is currently active in many states of the country, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh.
Due to heavy rains and breaking of dams in many districts of these states, water has spread over a large area, which is likely to pose a serious threat to Kharif crops.
Floods are being seen in Mumbai, Kolhapur, Pune, Satara and Chandrapur of Maharashtra. Crops have submerged due to waterlogging in the fields.
Some other districts are also affected by floods. The worrying thing is that the Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of continuation of rain in many areas of the state during the next 24 hours. Due to this, farmers are looking very worried.
It is worth noting that Maharashtra is among the leading producers of crops like cotton, soybean, pigeon pea and sugarcane.
Many districts of Maharashtra's neighboring states - Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh are also facing the problem of torrential rains and waterlogging in the fields.
The condition of Surat, Bharuch, Rajkot and Navsari districts in Gujarat is worse. Similarly, Damoh, Sagar, Sheoni of Madhya Pradesh and Sukma district of Chhattisgarh are in the grip of floods.
Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh and Sonipat district in Haryana are also facing torrential rains. Many districts of Bihar and Assam are already facing severe floods. However,
the assessment of the damage to agricultural crops and horticultural products will be possible only after the flood water recedes.
But experts say that if the rain continues in the low-lying areas prone to waterlogging, the situation may worsen because pulses, oilseeds and cotton crops will not be able to bear the stagnation of water for a long time.
