Global Lentil Prices Remain Under Pressure

Vancouver. Global lentil prices remained under pressure last week. Confirmation of large harvests in top producing and exporting countries like Canada and Australia led to a softening of prices. Canada's government agency, Statistics Canada, and Australia's government institution, ABARES, have projected a significant increase in lentil production in their respective countries.

Meanwhile, Russia and Kazakhstan have also reported excellent lentil harvests, leading to expectations of a substantial increase in global supply and availability.

The problem is not only the increased production and stocks in producing and exporting countries, but also the weak global demand for lentils.

The imbalance between supply and demand is naturally increasing pressure on prices. This trend is likely to continue for a considerable period.

Experts say that if the pressure on lentil prices persists in the coming months, it could affect planting in Canada next year, which is scheduled to begin in April 2026. Planting will then begin in Australia in May.

Lentil planting is currently underway in India, but as of last week, the planted area was lagging behind that of 2024.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) will release its final production figures for the US on January 12, 2026, and significant changes from the previous production estimate of 516,000 tons are not expected.

The US produced 423,000 tons of lentils in 2024. This year, an increase in green lentil production is anticipated.
