Mumbai. Although the import of Tuvar was weak in April this time as compared to last year, but after that it has started increasing well.

According to the available data, during the first four months of the current financial year i.e. April-July 2024, the total import of Tuvar in the country is estimated to increase to 2,69,474 tonnes, which is about 97 thousand tonnes more than the import of 1,72,449 tonnes in the same months last year.

Compared to last year, this time the import of Tuvar got stuck in April from 83,149 tonnes to 61,978 tonnes, but in May it improved from 38,288 tonnes to 60,272 tonnes, in June it increased from 29830 tonnes to 79,125 and in July it jumped from 21,183 tonnes to 68100 tonnes.

During the entire period (April-March) of the financial year 2023-24, a total of 7.71 lakh tonnes of tur was imported in the country, which was less than the import of 8.95 lakh tonnes in 2022-23 and 8.40 lakh tonnes in 2021-22.

Due to decrease in domestic production and also less import, the supply and availability of tur in the country could not reach the appropriate level and the prices increased drastically.

It is worth noting that tur is imported in India mainly from Myanmar and some African countries which include Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya, Sudan, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Benin etc.

During July 2024, 24 thousand tonnes of tur was imported from Myanmar in the country while 23,374 tonnes from Sudan, 8442 tonnes from Mozambique, 5540 tonnes from Tanzania,

1383 tonnes from Malawi, 3938 tonnes from Nigeria, 698 tonnes from Kenya, 553 tonnes from Uganda and 151 tonnes from Benin are estimated to be imported.

Due to high market prices, limited stock and favorable weather, tur is being sown brilliantly during the current Kharif season and its production area has jumped from 33.27 lakh hectares last year to 41.89 lakh hectares this time.

There has been a huge increase in its area in Karnataka and Maharashtra. Export of new tur from African countries may start soon.
