Thiruvananthapuram. Southwest monsoon has been active in the southern and western states of the country for the last few days, while now its trough is likely to move northwards and reach northwestern and eastern India.

As a result, there are chances of heavy rains in states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh in the next 2-3 days.

Torrential rains may also occur in some states of eastern India, which include Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and some parts of West Bengal.

Although during the current year, the southwest monsoon rains at the national level were 2.1 percent more than the long-term average till July 30, but due to very less rainfall in some areas of the country, there is a threat of drought.

Despite less rainfall, the total production area of Kharif crops is ahead of last year, but the area of the most important food grain-paddy has gone behind a bit.

While several districts of Uttar Pradesh witnessed severe floods, many other districts received less rainfall. Some districts of Bihar and Jharkhand are also facing lack of rainfall while the temperature remains high.

The expected rainfall in the current week will bring relief to farmers in the scarcity states and especially the pace of paddy transplantation will increase.

The area under pulses, oilseeds and coarse cereals has already surpassed last year and the area under sugarcane has also increased somewhat, but paddy and cotton cultivation has lagged behind.

For paddy transplantation, it is necessary to have water in the fields, which is not possible in some areas due to lack of rain.
