Heavy import of urad is happening regularly

Chennai. Heavy import of urad is happening regularly from Myanmar in India. According to the data received, during the first four months of the current financial year i.e. April-July 2024, the import of urad in the country is estimated to increase to 2,56,317 tonnes,
which is 1,24,366 tonnes more than the actual import of 1,31,951 tonnes in the same months of the year 2023. Earlier, in the same period, the import of urad was 99,603 tonnes in the year 2022 and 1,46,596 tonnes in 2021.
Compared to the year 2023, during 2024, the import of urad increased from 25,016 tonnes to 55,436 tonnes in April and jumped from 31,625 tonnes to 77,775 tonnes in May.
June imports are estimated to increase from 40,985 tonnes to 74,373 tonnes and July imports are estimated to improve from 34,325 tonnes to 48,733 tonnes.
During the entire period (April-March) of the financial year 2023-24, a total of 6,24,222 tonnes of urad was imported in the country,
which was more than the imports of 5,24,813 tonnes in 2022-23 and 6,11,611 tonnes in 2021-22. Prior to that, 3,44,790 tonnes of urad was imported in the financial year 2020-21 and 3,12,078 tonnes in the financial year 2019-20.
Most of the urad imports in India come from the northeastern neighboring country - Myanmar, while some imports are also done from Brazil and Thailand.
A total of 48,733 tonnes of urad is estimated to be imported in India during July 2024, which includes 47,197 tonnes from Myanmar, 1386 tonnes from Brazil and 150 tonnes from Thailand.
Out of this, 42,399 tonnes of urad was imported at Chennai port, 4209 tonnes at JNPT and 2125 tonnes at Kolkata port. Import of urad from Myanmar will continue regularly in future as well.
The sowing area of urad during Kharif season is lagging behind last year. According to government data, till August 2, 2024, its total production area could reach 25.96 lakh hectares,
which was 25 thousand hectares less than the sowing area of 26.21 lakh hectares during the same period last year.
