Akola. Due to heavy rains of the southwest monsoon and waterlogging in the fields, there are reports of heavy damage to soybean, cotton, tur and paddy as well as onion and green vegetable crops in about one and a half dozen districts of Maharashtra including Chandrapur, Jalgaon, Wardha, Amravati, Buldhana, Bhandara, Dhule and Akola.
Assessment and survey of damage to fruits is being done in various districts and the loss will be known only after the completion of this process. It is worth noting that heavy monsoon rains have already occurred in Maharashtra, while its series has not ended yet.
Heavy rains are expected there in the next month i.e. August as well. Last year, the month of August was dry and hot in the state, due to which Kharif crops were heavily damaged.
The supply of grains, pulses and fruits-vegetables in the wholesale market of Pune is being badly affected. There has been the third highest rainfall in the month of July so far. As a result, producers are facing a lot of difficulty in bringing their produce to the markets.
According to the primary data released officially, due to heavy rains and waterlogging in the fields, Kharif crops have been damaged in more than 68,457 hectares of land in 18 districts of Maharashtra, while more damage is likely in the coming time.
It is noteworthy that Maharashtra is one of the leading states of soybean, cotton, tur and onion in the country. There was heavy rain there last week also.
