New Delhi. In the Union General Budget presented in the Lok Sabha on July 23 for the financial year 2024-25, a huge amount has been allocated for flood management (control), development of water resources, development of rivers, renovation of Ganga and development and expansion of irrigation facilities.
This will not only create a good system for irrigation of various crops but will also reduce the damage to crops due to severe floods.
A total allocation of Rs 21,323 crore has been fixed in all these items, which is about Rs 300 crore more than the amount allocated in the interim budget. On the other hand, the budget allocation for most other ministries is almost equal to the amount allocated in the interim budget.
It is known that the interim budget was presented in February 2024 before the Lok Sabha elections.
More than half of the agricultural sector in the country is still dependent on rain and changes in the monsoon conditions have a direct impact on the production of crops.
Due to lack of rainfall and irrigation facilities, rice, wheat, coarse grains, pulses and oilseeds crops are often affected in Kharif and Rabi seasons and their production decreases.
Farmers in rain-dependent areas often have to suffer losses. If good irrigation facilities are available there, it will help a lot in increasing agricultural production.
The issue of flood control is also worth considering. Every year, especially in many districts of states like Uttar Pradesh,
Bihar and Assam, severe floods occur, which not only disrupts the life of the people but also causes huge damage to the crops.
This time also, many districts of these states are caught in the grip of devastating floods. This is causing damage to Kharif crops and also hindering their sowing.
In other states, due to torrential rains and increase in the water level of rivers, severe floods occur at the local level. It is necessary to control it.
