Impact of Storms and Rainfall on Wheat Crops in Several States

New Delhi. The Chairman of the Wheat Products Promotion Society states that, due to the onslaught of storms and rainfall, wheat grains in certain regions of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have lost their luster, and it is feared that approximately 10–20 percent of the crop has been damaged.
Reports are emerging of damage to wheat crops—which were ready for harvest—in several parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, caused by unseasonal rains accompanied by strong winds.
Rahul Chauhan, Director at iGrain India, notes that since the spell of storms and rainfall is still ongoing, the possibility of further damage to the crops cannot be ruled out. This is having an adverse impact on both the yield and quality of the wheat.
Humid weather conditions had set in as early as the second half of March; notably, wheat harvesting typically takes place at the very end of the pre-monsoon season. While harvesting was scheduled to commence in March in several states, its pace remained extremely slow due to inclement weather.
According to Rahul Chauhan, the adverse weather conditions prevailing during the harvest preparation phase have caused the wheat grains to become discolored, resulting in a loss of their natural golden sheen. Consequently, the market prices for such wheat may remain subdued.
