Improved Water Stock Situation in Western Region Reservoirs

Nagpur: The western region of the country comprises states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa, where 58 major dams and reservoirs currently hold a water stock of 32.20 billion cubic meters (BCM). This stock represents 83.4 percent of their total storage capacity. Although this level is lower than the 93.9 percent recorded during the same period last year, it is still considered quite satisfactory. Maintaining a water stock of over 80 percent in these dams and reservoirs is a positive development, especially given the impact of the El Niño weather cycle and a weak monsoon.

Similarly, in the central region—comprising Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand—the water stock across 28 major dams and reservoirs has improved to 41.34 BCM, representing 85.1 percent of their total storage capacity. During the corresponding period last year, these reservoirs held 90.8 percent of their capacity. Madhya Pradesh has received heavy rainfall this season.

However, the water storage situation appears somewhat weaker in the southern states. A total of 28.94 BCM of water is currently available across 50 major dams and reservoirs in the region, amounting to 51.8 percent of their total storage capacity. The southern region includes states such as Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
