India-US farm trade deal likely soon
★ The United States is pressuring India to open its agricultural market to more foreign products. The US wants India to reduce import duties on American farm goods such as pulses, nuts, oilseeds, and fruits.
★ However, instead of cutting tariffs directly, India is planning to allow limited imports through mechanisms like import quotas and a Minimum Import Price (MIP) to protect domestic farmers.
★ According to government sources, an interim agreement between India and the US could be reached by June. This would help avoid the US tariffs scheduled to take effect from July 8.
