Jakarta. Bulog, the government agency of Indonesia, one of the world's largest rice importing countries, has issued a new international tender for the purchase of 3.20 lakh tonnes of white rice with 5 percent breakage during the current month.
The issuance of a new tender for rice import in this country located in South-East Asia may stabilize the price of this important food in major exporting countries like Vietnam and Thailand, whereas in recent days, a softening environment was being seen in it.
The tender for rice import is being issued by Bulog regularly. Bulog intends to buy rice from countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Pakistan.
The supply period of rice under the new tender has been kept between August-September. India will not get an opportunity to participate in this tender because the commercial export of non-Basmati white rice from here has been banned since last year.
According to Bulog, the result of the successful bidders in the tender will be announced on August 2 and this will require shipment of rice produced in the 2024 crop year, which has not been milled before six months.
This tender issued on July 19 also includes the condition of supplying rice with only 5 percent breakage.Indonesia's state procurement agency - Bulog has set a quota of import of 36 lakh tonnes of rice during the entire period of the year 2024, which is 2 lakh tonnes less than the import quota of 38 lakh tonnes for the year 2023.
It is known that a few years ago Indonesia had set a goal of achieving self-sufficiency in rice production, but due to lack of increase in production in accordance with demand and consumption, it is being forced to import huge quantities of it regularly.
This rice tender has been issued with some delay when the price of white rice started falling. This tender may stabilize the rice market to some extent, but there is no scope for much increase.
