Sydney. There is a huge demand for Australian wheat in China and South-East and Far-East Asia. According to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics,
about 42.39 lakh tonnes of wheat was exported from Australia in bulk form and about 4.56 lakh tonnes in containers during the April-June 2024 quarter.
Under the bulk form, 16.90 lakh tonnes of wheat was shipped in April, 14.32 lakh tonnes in May and 11.17 lakh tonnes in June.
Its major buyers included China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and Vietnam etc. China also imported a little more than 4 thousand tonnes of durum wheat from Australia, while 7.58 lakh tonnes of wheat was imported in bulk and 57 thousand tonnes in containers.
About 4.56 lakh tonnes of wheat was exported from Australia in containers in the entire quarter, with 1.59 lakh tonnes in April, 1.56 lakh tonnes in May and 1.41 lakh tonnes in June.
Apart from China, other major countries importing Australian wheat in containers included Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and India.
A total of 13223 tonnes of wheat was imported from Australia in containers in the entire quarter, including 1965 tonnes in April, 245 tonnes in May and 11,013 tonnes in June.
Although generally importing wheat in India is not considered economically beneficial because a heavy customs duty of 40 percent is imposed on it,
but some flour millers of South India import wheat with high protein content from Australia and mix it with Indian wheat and then process it. This improves the quality of wheat products.
