According to the CFTC update released under the weekly Commitment of Traders report, by Tuesday managed money trimmed just 936 contracts from its net short position in CBT wheat futures and options, bringing it down to 106,229 contracts. As of January 13, speculators were net short 12,781 contracts in KC wheat futures and options, a reduction of 2,874 contracts from the previous week.
Export Sales data is fully updated through January 8, showing total wheat commitments at 20.392 million metric tons, which is 15% higher than last year. This is also 83% of USDA’s export projection, slightly behind the 85% average sales pace.
Export shipments have reached 15.465 million metric tons, accounting for 63% of the USDA estimate and running ahead of the 59% average shipping pace.
On Thursday, a South Korean importer purchased 92,300 metric tons of U.S. wheat through a tender.
