Kharif Sowing in Gujarat Lags by 3.25 Lakh Hectares

Ahmedabad. In the western state of the country- Gujarat, the monsoon rainfall being less and more at some places is affecting the sowing of Kharif crops.
By 4 August 2025, its total production area could reach only 70.47 lakh hectares, which is 3.25 lakh hectares less than the sowing area of 73.72 lakh hectares during the same period last year.
According to the latest data of the State Agriculture Department, during the current Kharif season, compared to last year, the production area of paddy in Gujarat decreased from 7.64 lakh hectares to 7.17 lakh hectares,
the sowing area of maize fell from 2.85 lakh hectares to 2.65 lakh hectares and the area of sorghum slipped from 16 thousand hectares to 5 thousand hectares,
but the area of millet improved from 1.49 lakh hectares to 1.54 lakh hectares. The total production area of paddy and coarse grains decreased from 12.23 lakh hectares last year to 11.47 lakh hectares this time.
The sowing of pulses crops also fell from 3.39 lakh hectares to 2.97 lakh hectares. Under this, the production area of Arhar (Tuvar) decreased from 2.05 lakh hectares to 1.84 lakh hectares and the sowing area of Urad fell from 77 thousand hectares to 59 thousand hectares, while the area of moong remained at the previous level of 44 thousand hectares.
But with the help of groundnut, the total production area of oilseed crops increased from 23.88 lakh hectares last year to 25.75 lakh hectares this time.
The sowing area of groundnut jumped from 19 lakh hectare to 20.42 lakh hectare and the area under castor also increased from 1.47 lakh hectare to 2.30 lakh hectare but the sowing area under soybean fell from 2.97 lakh hectare to 2.66 lakh hectare and the area under sesame slipped from 44 thousand hectare to 38 thousand hectare.
The production of cotton also fell from 23.36 lakh hectare to 20.36 lakh hectare but the area under sorghum registered an increase of more than 6 thousand hectare.
