Lentil exports from Canada expected to increase by 3 lakh tonnes

Vancouver. The Canadian Ministry of Agriculture has estimated the export of about 19 lakh tonnes of lentils from the country in the 2024-25 marketing season, which is 3 lakh tonnes more than the potential shipment of 16 lakh tonnes in the 2023-24 season, but about 3 lakh tonnes less than the reviewed export of 22.09 lakh tonnes in 2022-23. In fact, the Ministry of Agriculture has expressed the possibility of domestic production of lentils jumping from 16.70 lakh tonnes last year to 25 lakh tonnes this time,
which is 2 lakh tonnes more than the total production of 23 lakh tonnes in the 2022-23 season. As a result, there will be an increase in the exportable stock of this important pulse there and the market price being competitive will provide intensity in increasing shipments.
According to the ministry, the average export offer price of lentils was recorded at $1010 per tonne in the 2023-24 marketing season (August-July), which is expected to fall to $830 per tonne in the 2024-25 marketing season.
According to official data, the lentil sowing area in Canada increased from 14.85 lakh hectares last year to 17.05 lakh hectares this time, while its average yield rate is expected to increase from 1.15 tonnes per hectare to 1.50 tonnes per hectare if the weather conditions remain normal. The total availability of lentils there is expected to increase to 26.25 lakh tonnes in the 2024-25 season.
