Lentil Market Stable Amidst Weak Trading

Regina. Reduced activity from both buyers and sellers led to limited trading in Western Canadian lentil markets, resulting in largely stable prices. Compared to last week, the price of No. 2 grade large green lentils fell to a low of 25 cents per pound this week.

Similarly, the price of No. 1 grade small green lentils also slipped to 20-22 cents per pound. As for red lentils, the FOB price was 21 cents and the delivered price was 22.8 cents per pound. Trading in special grade and French green lentils was extremely limited, with little buyer interest.

According to trade analysts, lentil prices are likely to remain soft or stable for the next few weeks. A change in the market direction is only expected after the planting season ends in India and the production outlook becomes clearer.

Australia has had a record lentil harvest and is aggressively trying to export its produce to India and other Southeast Asian countries, posing a significant challenge and tough competition for Canadian exporters.

Lentil planting in Canada will begin next April, while in Australia it will start in May-June. The lentil planting area in India remains similar to last year, and the new crop will be ready and arrive in the markets in March-April.
