Lentil production in Canada is expected to increase to 25 lakh tonnes

Ottawa. The Agriculture Ministry of Canada has estimated that the domestic production of lentils will increase to 25 lakh tonnes in the current season of 2024-25, which is more than the production of 16.71 lakh tonnes in the 2023-24 season and 23.01 lakh tonnes in the 2022-23 season.
According to the new monthly report of the Ministry of Agriculture, during the 2024-25 season, as compared to 2023-24, on one hand the sowing area of lentil has jumped from 14.85 lakh hectares to 17.04 lakh hectares and secondly, due to favorable weather and rainfall conditions, its average yield rate is also expected to improve from 1.14 tonnes per hectare to 1.49 tonnes per hectare.
According to the report of the Ministry of Agriculture, during the 2024-25 season, the total availability of lentils will increase to 26.25 lakh tonnes with the previous outstanding stock of 50 thousand tonnes in Canada, production of 25 lakh tonnes and possible import of 75 thousand tonnes.
Out of this, 19 lakh tonnes of lentils will be exported and 2.75 lakh tonnes will be used domestically and at the end of the marketing season, there will be an outstanding surplus stock of 4.50 lakh tonnes.
The average price of lentils will also decrease to around $ 830 per tonne. In comparison, during the current marketing season (August-July) of 2023-24, the total availability of lentils reached 19.13 lakh tonnes with an outstanding stock of 1.47 lakh tonnes, production of 16.71 lakh tonnes and import of 95 thousand tonnes.
Out of this, 16 lakh tonnes were exported and 2.63 lakh tonnes were used domestically and at the end of the season, there is a possibility of surplus stock of 50 thousand tonnes remaining. The average price of Canadian lentils was estimated to be $1010 per tonne in the current marketing season of 2023-24.
Lentils are imported into Canada mainly from the US. In the 2023-24 season, due to the decrease in domestic production, the price of lentils had increased significantly there, but now with the indication of excellent production in the 2024-25 season, prices are expected to fall.
India is a leading importer of Canadian lentils. Many other countries including the United Arab Emirates and Turkey also import lentils in large quantities from Canada.
