Movement of commercial ships via Black Sea route stalled

Moscow. Due to the ongoing fierce conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Black Sea shipping route has once again become blocked and unsafe for commercial vessels. This raises concerns about the impact on India's imports, particularly of yellow peas and sunflower oil. Both nations are targeting ports in the Black Sea region as well as the cargo ships operating there. While these attacks had ceased for a period, they have now resumed.

Russia and Ukraine are major exporters of wheat, maize, barley, pulses, and oilseeds. Russia is the world's largest wheat exporter, and Ukraine also exports vast quantities of the grain. Agricultural exports from both countries saw a significant rise in September compared to August, as neither side attacked the other's ships for nearly a month; however, the situation has now changed.

India sources the largest share of its sunflower oil imports from Russia and also imports substantial quantities of yellow peas from there. Additionally, Russia exports limited quantities of lentils to India. Imports of these products from the region are now effectively coming to a temporary halt, which could pose challenges for India, given that Russian products are relatively cost-effective.
