Mustard Acreage and Output Likely to Rise Sharply

New Delhi. All conditions are favorable for increasing the sowing area of mustard, the most important oilseed crop of the Rabi season. Firstly, the government has increased its minimum support price (MSP) by 4.3 percent from Rs. 5950 per quintal in the 2024-25 season to Rs. 6200 per quintal for the 2025-26 season.
Second, China has begun purchasing rapeseed meal (mustard cake) from India in large quantities. Mustard oil prices are also at a high level, making the wholesale market price attractive to farmers for the past several months.
Oil millers are having no difficulty purchasing mustard from farmers at higher prices. In fact, mustard prices have been fluctuating above the MSP since May 2025.
Heavy southwest monsoon rains in major mustard-producing states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Gujarat have provided adequate soil moisture, allowing farmers to sow mustard seeds without any difficulties. Encouraged by the attractive returns, farmers are showing significant interest in mustard cultivation.
Consequently, a significant increase in the area under cultivation of this important oilseed is expected. Last year, the area under cultivation decreased slightly, but it still remained well above the five-year average of 7.9 million hectares. It would not be surprising if mustard production increased to 10 million hectares or even more during the current Rabi season.
While the production of any crop is largely dependent on the weather, this year, it is certain that farmers will spare no effort to ensure the best care for their crops.
Every effort will be made to increase mustard production. The winter season has begun, and temperatures are beginning to drop, which is beneficial for the mustard crop.
