Mandalay. The Myanmar government has set a target of exporting 18.90 lakh tonnes of pulses from the country for the entire period of the current financial year (April-March) of 2024-25. Out of that, a little more than 7 lakh tonnes of pulses have been exported in April-July 2024. Data released by the Myanmar Commerce Ministry shows that a total of 7,06,190 tonnes of pulses were exported from the country from April 1 to July 5, 2024, earning an income of $ 60.90 crore.
It is worth noting that pulses are the second most important agricultural product exported from Myanmar after rice. Some other pulses including urad, moong and tuvar are produced there and India remains its major market.
Myanmar exports almost the entire quantity of urad and most of the tuvar to India, while moong is exported to China and European countries as its import is banned in India.
With the availability of India's huge market, Myanmar producers are getting attractive income and hence the production of pulses is increasing there. Good production of pulses in this northeastern neighboring country of India is boosting the export business.
During April to July 5, 2024, 2.58 lakh tonnes of urad, 1.49 lakh tonnes of moong and 1.11 lakh tonnes of tuvar were exported from Myanmar, while the remaining exports were of other pulses.
Out of the total export of 7.06 lakh tonnes of pulses, about 6.82 lakh tonnes were shipped by sea / route and the remaining 25 thousand tonnes were exported through road border route.
