Myanmar’s Urad Production Expected to Reach Record 2.1 Million Tonnes: Deputy Agriculture Minister
★ Myanmar’s urad production in the upcoming season 2025-26 (April-March) is expected to reach 2.1 million tonnes, up from 1.8 million tonnes last year and 1.4 million tonnes in 2023-24.
★ India is Myanmar’s largest buyer, importing around 715,000 tonnes of urad in FY25, accounting for over 87% of India’s total urad imports. Myanmar also exported about 400,000 tonnes of tur (pigeon pea) to India.
★ This year, India’s kharif urad crop has been affected by heavy rainfall, with losses expected in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, which may increase import dependence.
★ Myanmar’s tur production is expected to rise to 515,000 tonnes in the next season.
★ Due to poor weather, India’s urad and tur production has been impacted, and imports will be needed to meet domestic demand.
Myanmar holds a monopoly in urad exports, while tur faces competition from African suppliers. Currently, India imports tur from both Myanmar and African countries.
★ Seeing India’s production affected, exporters may increase shipments from Myanmar’s new crop, which will start arriving from March.
★ Rising import prices are likely to impact Indian markets and provide further support to domestic prices.
