News Capsule: Australia Chana Export Update
★ In the pre-Christmas period, chickpeas remain the biggest bulk commodity moving out of Queensland ports as well as Newcastle, although overall export volumes are lower compared to last year.
★ After strong post-harvest sales of canola, along with some shipments of chickpeas and barley, wheat sales have slowed, with much of the crop being held either on farms or in warehouses.
★ Lower prices are discouraging farmer selling, leading to increased on-farm and warehouse storage. Reduced imports into India are also gradually tightening stocks. During April–October last season, India imported around 150,000 tonnes of chickpeas, whereas this year imports have remained below 100,000 tonnes.
★ Australian farmers are expected to sell only when they receive better prices. With India’s new crop still some time away, early signs are emerging of potential price firmness in the coming months.
